A British mother and her Spanish partner have been arrested in Marbella after their baby tested positive for cocaine.
Police were called to Cabopino shortly after 9am on February 8, after witnesses saw the couple making a bonfire in the dunes of the popular tourist beach.
The family were found to be living inside a tent next to their insured car which did not have its ITV (MOT).
Police officers noticed the eight-month-old baby showed signs of malnutrition and feared for his health living in a tent in the middle of one of the worst winters in years.
The mother, 25, father, 43, and baby were all taken to the Las Albarizas health centre, where doctors decided to refer the baby to the Costa del Sol hospital.
Once there, medics ruled that he was underweight for his age, and submitted him for more tests.
It was only when the boy’s urine was tested that they detected cocaine, leading the Policia Nacional to immediately arrest both parents, reports Diario Sur.
It later emerged that the mother had requested several appointments at the Marbella hospital’s pediatric unit in recent months, but did not attend them.
The parents are due to appear before a judge.
