A Policia Nacional officer has died while returning from helping with the flood-ravaged region of Jerez.
The 43-year-old, named only as Carmen, is reported to have suffered a collapse behind the wheel on the A-4 motorway on Monday afternoon.
The officer was returning from an emergency operation in El Portal, in Jerez de la Frontera, following heavy rainfall caused by Storm Marta.
The incident occurred as she was travelling in the direction of Jerez.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene but were unable to save her life.
Carmen had been deployed as part of a response operation to deal with the consequences of the recent floods in the area.
The severe weather has caused significant disruption across parts of Cadiz province.
She was attached to the Local Citizen Security Brigade and also served with the Citizen Assistance Group (GAC) Jerez 105.
The Policia Nacional has expressed its condolences to Carmen’s family, friends and colleagues, paying tribute to her commitment and dedication to public service.
Regional authorities have also acknowledged the wider impact of the storm. The Junta de Andalucia has confirmed that work is already under way to assess and rebuild damage caused by the extreme weather, with losses expected to run into the billions.
