Malaga has been rattled by three minor earthquakes so far this Saturday.
According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), the tremors were recorded in Casares, Ubrique and Cuevas del Becerro.
The quake in Casares – a popular town among British expats and tourists – measured 2.5 on the Richter scale at 5.21am and at a depth of 22km.
At least two people called the 112 emergency hotline to report feeling shaking, one in Casares and the other in Jimena de la Frontera.
Just minutes later, at 5.33am, another tremor was detected in Jubrique, measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale at a depth of nine kilometres.
The latest tremor was recorded in Cuevas del Becerro at 8.24am. It was the weakest of the three, with a magnitude of 1.7, but the only one registered at surface level.
Experts believe the tremors are linked to the large amount of water currently stored underground, a phenomenon known in scientific terms as trop-plein (from the French for ‘overfull’).
