This is the moment shoppers in Cadiz found supermarket shelves completely empty on Tuesday.
Videos shared online showed how the aisles of a Mercadona in Jerez had fallen prey to panic buying.
Canal Sur journalist Fernando Garcia said shelves were left empty ‘in many supermarkets’ in the province.
It came as the whole of Cadiz was placed under orange and red alerts for extreme weather on Wednesday.
Residents were warned of several days of downpours that would likely affect roads and disrupt travel.
Locals have been advised to avoid all unnecessary journeys while the worst of Storm Leonardo passes.
Unfortunately, this has led many to stock up on food and groceries, leaving shelves bare in many stores.
Social media users blasted ‘selfish’ shoppers, comparing the scenes to the panic buying witnessed during the Covid pandemic.
Aerial footage from the Policia Nacional this morning showed homes, cars and farmland already underwater in Jerez de la Frontera.
Some of the devastating scenes have been caused by the Guadalete River, which has burst its banks for the second time in two weeks.
It comes as Storm Leonardo is unleashing a water bomb of rain across Andalucia, after converging with an ‘atmospheric river’ from the Caribbean overnight.
The Jerez region is under an orange alert from state weather agency Aemet for heavy rain throughout Wednesday.
The neighbouring Grazalema district, meanwhile, is on the highest red alert, meaning there is an ‘extraordinary risk’ to the population.
