A dead body has been found hidden in the utility room of an apartment building in Benalmadena following weeks of complaints about a stench.
The corpse of a man, dressed from the waist up but in underwear, was found in Arroyo de la Miel on Tuesday morning (January 27), police have confirmed.
The utility room is located one floor below street level, on a landing shared by two flats.
Next to one of them is a small room, accessed through a wooden door with ventilation grilles, secured by a padlock.
Inside, at floor level, there is a low, enclosed space no more than 40cm high, sealed with a metal hatch.
The cavity is meant to house pipes and cabling, but was filled with debris. That is where the body was found.
The grisly discovery was made by a neighbour, who immediately called in police, who in turn alerted the coroner’s office to remove the body, given its advanced state of decomposition.
The cavity where the body was found was so narrow that it was impossible to carry out a safe forensic examination.
Firefighters had to be called in to widen the opening so that the body could be accessed.
The death is believed to have occurred several weeks earlier, likely at the turn of the new year.
The body was clothed from the waist up but in underwear, and is believed to be that of an unidentified man.
The corpse has been sent for an autopsy while the investigation continues.
