An earthquake was felt across parts of Malaga province on Thursday evening after a tremor struck the Alboran Sea.
The quake, which measured four on the Richter scale, occurred at 6.32pm at a depth of 75km.
Its epicentre was located in western Alboran, according to Spain’s Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN).
Residents reported feeling the tremor in Malaga city and in several areas of the province, particularly in the Axarquia region.
The IGN said the shaking was detected in Torre del Mar, Rincin de la Victoria, Benagalbón and Torre de Benagalbón, as well as Calahonda–Chaparral (Mijas), Cancelada (Estepona), Fuengirola, Las Lagunas (Mijas) and Benajarafe.
It is the first recorded earthquake felt in Malaga so far in 2026, following a cluster of minor seismic events in December, when four tremors were registered within just over two weeks.
Those quakes affected Iznate, Fuengirola, Estepona and Valle de Abdalajís, with the Fuengirola earthquake – measuring 4.9 – the strongest of the series.
