Some 20 people have been cut off from their homes in Coin after a key bridge was destroyed by Storm Francis on Sunday night.
The Puente Valenciana, which travelled over the Rio Grande, was washed away by the strong river surge, leaving residents without road access.
However, the fallen bridge is not the only reason for the isolation. Landslides along the Camino de Alozaina have also blocked access routes, further complicating efforts for residents to move in and out of the area.
Coin Town Hall has prioritised reopening the Camino de Alozaina so that affected families can regain access to their homes while longer-term repairs are assessed.
The council is coordinating the work with Alozaina Town Hall, as the road links both municipalities.
The aim is to stabilise the route damaged by landslides, allowing residents to resume daily life while responsibility for repairing the collapsed bridge is clarified.
Following the collapse of the Puente Valenciana, the regional government of Andalucía confirmed that its Agriculture, Water and Rural Development department has contacted state-owned company Tragsa to deploy heavy machinery to the area.
Machinery is also being sent to Guaro, Tolox and Coín to clear riverbeds, remove debris and sediments caused by flooding, and open provisional access points in affected areas.
In the coming days, regional government technicians are expected to visit the site of the collapsed bridge to assess the damage and determine which authority is responsible for carrying out the permanent repair.
Coín Town Hall has also confirmed that several other rural areas have been affected by flooding in the municipality, which has a population of more than 25,000.
The Rio Pereilas overflowed, cutting off access to the Albuqueria area. Municipal crews have been working on site with heavy machinery to redirect the river and reopen a temporary access route.
Within the town itself, the main urban incident has been a large sinkhole on the Mijas road, linked to heavy rainfall on December 28 and subsequent downpours. Repair work is ongoing, but the road remains closed to traffic.
