An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale has been recorded on the Costa del Sol.
The natural phenomenon caused noticeable trembling in Manilva, Casares and parts of the Costa de la Luz, including Sotogrande and San Roque.
According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the epicentre of the 6am quake was 52km below the surface, just southwest of Estepona.
No material damage was reported, partly thanks to its significant depth.
This is because the deeper the epicentre, the more the energy is absorbed before reaching the surface.
A 3.2 magnitude earthquake at a depth of only 5km feels like a sharp, strong jolt, however, at 52km, it is usually perceived as a slight vibration or mild dizziness, although the shock wave can cover a wider area.
The coastline between Malaga and Cadiz lies in a zone of friction between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates.
Although a magnitude of 3.2 falls within what experts consider ‘minor’, it serves as a reminder of the constant seismic activity of the Alboran Sea.
