A fire has broken out at a major hospital in southern Spain, forcing the evacuation of patients and medical staff.

The blaze took hold early this morning on the exterior of Block 5 of Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena (the oncology building).

The flames, which began on the third floor, spread quickly along the building’s external cladding due to strong winds in the area.

Hospital staff immediately activated emergency protocols, moving patients away from the danger zone while fire crews and medical teams worked to secure the building.

Some patients, including those bedridden, were carried down the stairs, while others were able to walk out assisted by staff.

Blankets were provided as evacuees were taken to a safe area.

Although the flames raced along the façade, firefighters were able to prevent the fire from penetrating the interior rooms.

The fire was eventually brought under control

The fire is under control, with crews remaining on site to cool the affected area and prevent any reignition.
