A woman who caused a serious collision while driving on the wrong side of Malaga’s AP-7 tested positive for alcohol, it has emerged.

The unnamed suspect was filmed driving into oncoming traffic on the toll road on Saturday afternoon, before a white car smashed into her vehicle.

Five people were injured in the crash, which occurred near the Mijas exits, with one person in a serious condition.

Photos shared by Bomberos de Mijas (Mijas Firefighters) show the moment the driver of one the vehicles involved had to be cut out of their car.

In another photo, one of the vehicles, believed to be that of the alleged drink driver, can be seen totally wrecked.

The head-on impact happened at kilometre 207 of the motorway and triggered a large emergency response, Andalucia’s 112 emergency service said.

Calls began reaching the control centre at around 5.40pm, with multiple motorists reporting that a vehicle was heading down the wrong side of the road.

Minutes later, other drivers phoned to say the car had collided head-on with another vehicle.

Health authorities later confirmed that five people were taken to the Costa del Sol Hospital for treatment.

Among the injured were four women – two aged 42 and two aged 43 – and a 36-year-old man.

One of the victims remains in a serious condition.

The Guarida Civil is now investigating what led the driver to enter the motorway in the wrong direction, in a phenomenon Spaniards refer to as ‘kamikaze drivers’.
