Sevilla is fast becoming a popular option for Brits and Americans looking to live in Spain.

The gorgeous capital of Andalucia is brimming with character, history and culture, and is far cheaper than traditional expat hotspots like Madrid or Barcelona.

A question that is asked by many prospective residents is how much it costs per month to live here.

I have lived in the city for a total of three years, and below is my honest guide based on what I and my friends have experienced.

Rent – your biggest expense

Like most places in Spain, rent is the make-or-break factor.

  • A one-bedroom flat in the historic centre (Santa Cruz, Triana, Alameda) will set you back between €750–€1,100 a month at least.
  • Move a little further out – Macarena or Los Remedios – and you can find one-beds for around €650–€800, although prices are rising.
  • If you’re sharing a flat, you’ll find rooms advertised from €300–€500 depending on location.

Utilities and bills

Electricity, water and rubbish collection typically add up to €80–€100 a month for a small flat – just be careful of leaving the aircon on in summer (or the heaters on in the cold winter nights).

You can get a great deal on home internet and mobile data from DIGI from as little as €13 per month.

Food and drink

Sevilla remains refreshingly affordable when it comes to eating and drinking. A weekly supermarket shop for one person (Mercadona, Carrefour, Lidl) can be done for €40–€60.

A menu del día (three-course lunch menu) can cost €12–€15, while a beer in a local bar is still just €1.50–€2.

Getting around

Sevilla is famously walkable and cycle-friendly. The public bike system (Sevici) is just €33 a year. A monthly public transport card covering buses, trams and metro costs around €40.

Taxis are cheaper than in Madrid or Barcelona, with a short ride within the city averaging €6–€10.

Lifestyle costs

  • Gym membership: €25–€50
  • Cinema ticket: €6–€8
  • Flamenco shows: from €20 in a peña (local venue) to €60+ in tourist hotspots
  • Football at Sevilla FC or Real Betis: €35–€70 a ticket depending on the match

So what’s the monthly total?

For a single expat in Sevilla, here’s a realistic monthly breakdown:

  • Rent: €750 (average outside the centre)
  • Bills: €80
  • Groceries: €200
  • Transport: €40
  • Leisure/eating out: €200–€300

Total: around €1,300 – €1,400 per month for a comfortable lifestyle.

Live frugally in a shared flat and skip some luxuries, and you can get by on €900–€1,000.

On the other end, if you want a central apartment, plenty of meals out, and regular trips around Andalucía, expect closer to €1,800–€2,000.

Sevilla may not be the cheapest corner of Andalucia – Granada and Cordoba often win that crown – but it offers unbeatable culture, nightlife and charm for the price.
