Andalucia once again topped Spain’s heat charts this week as a mini end-of-summer heatwave sparked a series of weather alerts.
The town measuring the highest temperature in the country on Wednesday was the Huelva municipality of El Granado, which registered a maximum of 40.8C.
According to Spain’s national weather agency Aemet, the temperature peak was recorded at 4.30pm.
Other towns across the region also dominated the national list of sweltering hotspots. Montoro (Cordoba) reached 40.2C, while Fuentes de Andalucia (Sevilla) and Andujar (Jaen) both hit 39.5C.
Granada-Cartuja and Granada Aeropuerto were not far behind, with highs of 39.8C and 39.1C respectively.
Even outside Andalucía, the heat was fierce, with Badajoz (40C) and Mérida (39.8C) ranking among the top 10 across Spain.

Aemet has now issued yellow weather alerts for Thursday September 18 across parts of Cordoba, Granada, Jaen and Sevilla.
Maximums are expected to remain between 38C and 39C in the Campiña Sevillana and Campiña Cordobesa, with similar levels forecast in the Cuenca del Genil (Granada) and in Jaen’s Sierra Morena, Condado, Cazorla, Segura and Guadalquivir Valley.
