A Spanish nutritionist has sought to dispell the ‘myth’ that drinking beer will wreak havoc on your weight loss goals.
The topic is particularly relevant in Spain, where socialising often means ordering a beer, leading it to have one of the highest alcohol consumptions in the OECD.
Despite its bad rep, nutritionist and content creator Pablo Ojeda took to Instagram this week to clear things up.
He said: ‘Today I’m here to debunk one of humanity’s great myths. Does beer make you fat, yes or no?
‘I’ve already been asked about 10 times this month. Let’s set it straight, because there’s a lot of confusion.’
It’s not the beer, it’s the tapas
‘The problem is not the beer,’ Ojeda explained. The real risk, he argued, comes from what people usually eat alongside it, such as salty snacks, fried food or tapas.
As for calories, he pointed out that a 330ml can of beer has ‘the same as a banana or a handful of nuts.’
According to Ojeda, the real secret is balance: ‘It’s about your diet as a whole, your exercise, your rest and your exposure to natural light. When all of that is under control, having a beer won’t make you fat.’
Still, he added a word of caution: ‘And remember, excess is always bad. I don’t encourage drinking. If someone feels like having a beer, let them do so in moderation.’
