Weather warning is issued for Spain’s Costa del Sol due to punishing ‘terral’ phenomenon

The rise in temperatures will be driven in part by the return of the terral wind

The Costa del Sol has been placed under a yellow weather warning for heat this Wednesday.

The alert by state weather agency Aemet will be in place between 1pm and 9pm, with maximum temperatures forecast to reach 36C in parts of the Malaga coast and the Guadalhorce Valley.

According to Aemet, the areas affected include much of the Costa del Sol, with towns such as Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Benalmadena and Torremolinos expected to feel the brunt of the heat.

Inland zones including Antequera, Ronda and the Guadalhorce valley are also under warning.

The rise in temperatures will be driven in part by the return of the terral wind, a hot, dry breeze from the interior that can push coastal thermometers several degrees higher than average for late August.

Aemet has advised residents and visitors to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day, and seeking shade or air-conditioned spaces where possible.

Yellow alerts indicate weather conditions that, while not extreme, could pose risks to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children and those with health conditions.

Temperatures are forecast to ease slightly from Thursday, with cooler coastal breezes expected to return later in the week.
