Dozens of cities across north and eastern Spain have been placed on alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms and even hail.

Under an orange alert for heavy rainfall on Saturday are Barcelona, Tarragona, the northern coast of Castellon, Zaragoza, Lleida and several other northern provinces.

State weather agency Aemet is warning of up to 50mm of rainfall in an hour, with the alerts beginning at 6am at ending at 9pm.

The aforementioned areas are also on alert for intense storms which ‘could be accompanied by hail of up to 2cm and very strong gusts of wind.’

Aemet is warning of intense thunderstorms between 3pm and midnight, which ‘may be accompanied by hail’.
