It’s no secret that the Costa del Sol remains one of the most attractive locations for prospective British expats.

Contents
  • 1. Malaga city
  • 2. Marbella
  • 3. Estepona
  • 4. Fuengirola
  • 5. Benalmadena

It is blessed with more than 320 days of sunshine per year and more than 160km of beaches.

The coast is also situated in the incredibly cultural region of Andalucia, meaning numerous historical cities are on your doorstep, including Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba.

But when it comes to choosing where to buy a home on the Costa del Sol, the choice can be overwhelming – and of course everyone has different needs and budgets.

According to AI, however, there are five cities that stand out from the rest. Below are the leading recommendations for Brits, according to Chatgpt.

1. Malaga city

Why it’s great:

  • Urban but authentic: Málaga is a vibrant port city with a strong Andalusian identity. It balances a rich cultural heritage with modern infrastructure.
  • International connections: The airport offers year-round, low-cost flights to the UK and the rest of Europe.
  • Top-tier healthcare: Several excellent public and private hospitals.
  • Growing expat scene: Especially appealing to younger Brits, digital nomads, and families looking for an authentic Spanish lifestyle.

Best for: Professionals, culture-lovers and expats wanting a city vibe.

2. Marbella

Why it’s great:

  • Upscale lifestyle: Marbella is synonymous with luxury – think golf courses, private schools, yacht clubs and gated communities.
  • Established British community: English is widely spoken. You’ll find British shops, pubs, and clubs, plus international schools like Swans and Aloha College.
  • Beaches & nightlife: Glamorous beach clubs and a lively social scene.

Best for: Affluent expats, retirees and families looking for high-end living with familiar comforts.

3. Estepona

Why it’s great:

  • Laid-back charm: Estepona has undergone a major transformation, keeping its Spanish soul while upgrading amenities.
  • Family-friendly: It’s quieter than Marbella but still offers top-notch schools, parks and family activities.
  • More affordable: Offers better value than Marbella while still being close to the action – although prices are rising rapidly.

Best for: Retirees and families seeking a quieter, more affordable coastal life without losing access to amenities.

4. Fuengirola

Why it’s great:

  • Very British-friendly: Fuengirola has one of the most established British communities in Spain. You’ll find British supermarkets, doctors, pubs and even a British Consulate office nearby.
  • Excellent transport: It’s the only town on the Costa del Sol with direct train access to Malaga airport (30 minutes), making travel back to the UK incredibly easy.
  • Affordable housing: More budget-friendly than Marbella or even Estepona, especially for apartments and rentals.

Best for: Retirees and long-term expats who want convenience, English-speaking services and a strong community.

5. Benalmadena

Why it’s great:

  • Good for families: With theme parks, aquariums, cable cars, and beaches, Benalmadena is great for raising kids.
  • Healthcare: Close proximity to top hospitals and clinics, including private English-speaking options.
  • Diverse housing options: From beachfront apartments to hillside villas with sea views, Benalmadena has something for every budget.
  • Great location: Between Malaga and Fuengirola, offering both accessibility and tranquility.

Best for: Families and expats seeking a mix of coastal relaxation and easy access to city life.
