There’s good news for growing families in rural Malaga as the provincial government has just opened applications for its 2025 ‘baby cheque’ scheme.
The birth and adoption grant offers up to €1,200 per child, with a total of €350,000 having been earmarked for the programme.
It aims to support families in smaller municipalities across the province. In all, 291 families living in towns with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants are expected to benefit from the cash boost.
But you’ll need to move quickly as the deadline to apply is June 30. Here are more details below.
How (and where) to apply
Applications can be submitted via multiple channels. Online submissions can be made through the official provincial website (sede.malaga.es) or the national electronic registry (rec.redsara.es).
If you’re going the paper route, applications can be sent by certified mail via the Post Office or handed in at diplomatic missions, consulates, and the Malaga Provincial Council’s Registration Assistance Office.
You can also apply in person through state or regional government offices, or any local body belonging to the public administration network.
Who qualifies?
Not everyone is eligible. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Residency in a municipality with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants.
- You must have been registered on the padron and living there continuously for at least two years.
- Only one parent or guardian can claim the grant per child.
- You must live with the child in question.
- Annual household income must not exceed €25,000.
The fine print – including all conditions – is available in the Official Gazette of the Province of Malaga (Boletin Oficial, No. 102).
What is the money for?
The €1,200 grant is designed to help with the real cost of raising a child – whether born or adopted between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2025. That includes everything from nappies and formula to healthcare and daily care costs.
But it doesn’t stop there. Parents can also claim for transport items like buggies and car seats, as well as nursery furniture – think high chairs, cribs, mattresses, changing tables and baby baths – up to a maximum of €300 per item.
So if you’re welcoming a new addition and meet the criteria, it’s worth applying. It won’t cover the cost of college, but it might just take the edge off those early expenses.
