A mother has been rescued after attempting to drive over the edge of a cliff in Alicante.

The 48-year-old was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle and ‘visibly distressed’ when officers from the Policia Nacional arrived at the scene on Monday night.

They had been called by the woman’s son, who was later pictured being consoled by officers following the traumatic ordeal.

The car’s engine was still on when cops arrived, and at one moment began moving further into the void below.

It was at this moment that two officers sprung into action, opening the driver’s door and pulling the woman out to safety.

The moving car then became stuck in the sand, with the front wheels pictured dangling over the cliff edge.

According to local newspaper TodoAlicante, officers found a ‘goodbye letter’ inside the car, which had been addressed to the woman’s son.

The mother was treated by medical services and taken to a hospital, where she remains under observation.

The Policia Nacional praised the bravery of the officers, who ‘did not hesitate to risk their lives to prevent a tragedy.’
