A man has died after plummeting from a hotel’s ‘sky bar’ in Gran Canaria – reportedly while trying to take a selfie.
The 48-year-old had been enjoying a night out with a friend on the eighth floor of a hotel in La Puntilla, overlooking the famous Las Canteras beach.
But the evening ended in tragedy just before closing time at 1.30am, when the man lost his footing and fell from the terrace.
According to police sources, he had his back to the railing while attempting to take a photo with the beach in the background.
As he leaned back for the shot, he slipped and plunged an estimated 25 to 30 metres to the pavement below.

Emergency services were called immediately by witnesses and staff at the Aloe Canteras Hotel, but there was nothing they could do. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Policia Nacional is investigating the incident. CCTV footage is also being reviewed in an effort to piece together exactly what happened.
A study by the iO Foundation, a scientific non-profit, found that between 2008 and 2021, at least 379 people lost their lives while taking selfies.
Falls, transport accidents and drowning were cited as the top causes.
