The husband of missing US expat Ana Knezevich has been found dead inside his prison cell in the US.

Serbian-born businessman David Knezevich was accused of kidnapping and murdering his wife in Madrid in February 2024.

Ana, 40, was in the middle of divorcing Knezevich when she mysteriously vanished from her newfound home in the Spanish capital.

US authorities have confirmed that Knezevich was found dead inside his cell at the Federal Detention Centre in Miami. They suspect he took his own life.

Ana, 40, was in the middle of divorcing Knezevich when she mysteriously vanished from her newfound home in the Spanish capital.

His defense attorney, Jayne Weintraub, announced the death of the accused on Monday, according to the Miami Herald, and the FBI is handling the investigation.

Ana’s family stated in a statement that the businessman’s death ‘closes a painful chapter’ in their lives.

However, they stated that they may never know the whereabouts of the her body, which has yet to be located.

Ana had only recently arrived to Madrid when she vanished. She wanted to rebuild her life after separating from her husband.

When news of her disappearance broke, her husband was nowhere to be found, raising suspicions.

As evidence against him mounted, he was arrested in April last year at Miami International Airport (USA).

Overwhelming evidence against Knezevich

Serbian-born businessman David Knezevich was accused of kidnapping and murdering his wife in Madrid in February 2024.

CCTV from February 2, 2024, captured a man wearing a motorcycle helmet disabling a security camera outside Ana’s Madrid apartment building.

An hour later, the same individual was seen leaving the building with a suitcase. Prosecutors alleged that David Knezevich resembled the man in the footage.

Cameras also showed Knezevich buying duct tape and the same brand of spray paint used to disable the camera at a Madrid hardware store on the day of Ana’s disappearance.

The prime suspect rented a Peugeot in Belgrade Serbia, just days before Ana vanished. That same vehicle was recorded passing through a toll booth near Madrid with stolen licence plates.

The car clocked up 4,800 miles when it was returned to the rental company.

On February 3, phone records showed how Knezevich asked a Colombian woman to translate some phrases into ‘perfect Colombian’ (Ana’s family are from Colombia).

The translated messaged were the exact words sent from Ana’s phone to her friends, which claimed she was going away with a new lover she had just met – a story her friends struggled to buy.
