A Dutch expat has been arrested after allegedly murdering his father in Tenerife.

The 34-year-old is accused of stabbing his victim before bashing him with rocks.

The horror incident occurred on Wednesday in the San Blas neighbourhood of San Miguel de Abona, in the south of the island.

The suspect has been sent to jail ahead of a trial after being charged with murder.

The violent attack took place at around 7pm.

The suspect lived in a cave or a slum near the area of Golf del Sur, just a few kilometres east of tourist hotspot Los Cristianos.

The caves on Tenerife are used by desperate residents who cannot afford homes – a growing issue due to so-called ‘over-tourism’.

They can offer shelter as they stay cool in summer and warm in winter, which is ideal for Tenerife’s subtropical climate.
