The driver behind the fatal Fuengirola car crash has been jailed after being charged with two counts of homicide.

The 45-year-old Iranian woman is accused of speeding down the Paseo Maritimo in Fuengirola on Thursday night before hitting the column of a building and swerving into the road.

The car hit a 25-year-old tourist from Sevilla who was walking hand-in-hand with his girlfriend.

Shell-shocked witnesses told Malaga Hoy how the young man was sent ‘flying’ into the air upon impact. Authorities said he died instantly.

Police sources told El Mundo that the girlfriend was completely devastated, telling officers ‘one second he was there, then he was gone’.

Footage shared from the scene of the crash next to a restaurant’s terrace last night showed people hugging and consoling one another.

The front seat passenger, 47, also a woman from Iran, died instantly. At least a dozen others were injured, including a baby.

The driver, who has no licence, was arrested in the aftermath after testing positive for illegal levels of alcohol in her system.

On Saturday, she was brought before the Court of Fuengirola, where a judge ordered her to be sent to prison, reports news agency EFE. She will be tried at a later a date.

The Nissan Qashqai was heading in the direction of Marbella when the horror crash unfolded at around 10pm following a day of Maundy Thursday celebrations.

The driver has been charged with two counts of homicide due to gross negligence, and injuries due to gross negligence.

Officers also accuse her of a traffic violation for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Fuengirola town hall.

One witness told Malaga Hoy: ‘I live on the first floor, and I almost felt an earthquake; we were very scared.

‘I saw it up close. I was actually looking out at the street and saw the car approach and hit the boy, who literally flew up… you never think you’re going to witness something like that until you see it right outside your front door.’
