A man has lost part of his leg and a 14-year-old boy has been injured after a shooting in Algeciras that left four people wounded and sparked a major police response.
The violence broke out on Saturday evening in the Quince de Junio neighbourhood, near the area known as Convoy de la Victoria, in what officers believe was a long-running family dispute that escalated dramatically.
According to early police findings, the incident began when a man entered a home armed with a shotgun and fired two shots, triggering a violent confrontation between those involved.
Emergency services were alerted at around 6pm after multiple reports of gunfire in the area, described as having significant social challenges.
Investigators believe one of the families involved had travelled from Marbella ahead of the clash.
All four victims were initially taken to Algeciras’ Punta de Europa hospital, where scenes of tension unfolded as relatives gathered and fears of reprisals grew.
Police were forced to seal off the hospital, deploying a heavy security presence to prevent further violence.
The most seriously injured victim, a 27-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg with severe vascular damage.
Doctors were ultimately forced to amputate part of the limb due to the extent of the injuries. He was later transferred to Cadiz’s Puerta del Mar hospital for further treatment.
A 14-year-old boy sustained a fractured hand during the incident, while the two other victims – including a 55-year-old woman who was grazed by a bullet – suffered less serious injuries and were discharged later that night.
On Sunday, Policia Nacional officers remained at the scene gathering evidence, with the street still cordoned off and under surveillance.
A security operation also continues around the hospital and neighbourhood to prevent any retaliatory attacks.
Authorities say the main line of inquiry points to a family feud, with no indication at this stage of links to drug trafficking – despite the area’s history of organised crime.
The shooting has shocked residents in Algeciras and once again raised concerns about security in certain parts of the Campo de Gibraltar.
