Drivers in Andalucia have had a string of speeding fines scrapped after a major blunder involving cameras on the A-7.
A signalling error on the stretch between San Roque and Algeciras meant multiple fines issued by average speed cameras – installed as recently as August 2025 – were effectively invalid.
It came after it emerged that the limits enforced by the cameras didn’t match what drivers were actually being told on the road.
According to Canal Sur, the issue only came to light after a wave of complaints from motorists, backed up by an investigation from insurance firm Arreza Seguros, which spotted inconsistencies across several speeding tickets.
The company found that drivers were being fined for exceeding 80km/hr, despite clear roadside signs in both directions stating the limit was 100km/hr.
Even more striking, the information panels linked to the cameras themselves failed to correctly reflect the lower limit being enforced.
The mismatch between signage and enforcement meant many of the fines did not comply with regulations, forcing Spain’s traffic authority, the Direccion General de Trafico (DGT), to step in.
Authorities have now admitted the error and confirmed that the affected fines have been cancelled after being deemed ‘improper’.
The incident has sparked anger among drivers in the Campo de Gibraltar, a busy corridor with heavy daily traffic.
