A major lorry crash brought one of Malaga’s busiest roads to a standstill for much of Holy Thursday, causing long delays and chaos for drivers heading towards the Costa del Sol.
The accident happened in the early hours of the morning when a large articulated lorry overturned on the A-7 near Campanillas in the direction of Almeria.
The incident, which occurred at around 1.20am, forced the closure of all lanes on the stretch of motorway for nearly 15 hours.
According to Spain’s traffic authority, the road did not fully reopen until just before 4pm.
Emergency services, including firefighters, Local Police, Guardia Civil officers and road maintenance crews, were deployed to the scene following the crash.
Paramedics also attended and requested a mobile intensive care unit to treat the driver – a 48-year-old man – who was later taken to Malaga’s Hospital Carlos Haya. His current condition is unknown.
The scale of the accident led to significant disruption throughout the day.
By mid-afternoon, traffic queues were still stretching for around four kilometres.
The incident caused major headaches on one of the busiest travel days of the Semana Santa period, with thousands of vehicles expected to be on the roads across the province.
