A British tourist died after taking illicit drugs before boarding his flight to Spain, an inquest has found.
Paul William Jones, 36, from Rhondda, South Wales, landed at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport on February 22, 2025 but soon began to feel unwell.
His condition worsened to the point that he sought medical help at the Hospital Marina Baixa, where he was admitted immediately.
Despite doctors’ efforts, his health continued to decline and he died five days later, according to reports in Welsh media.
A post-mortem found the cause of death to be hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy – a severe brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen.
The forensic report concluded that the condition stemmed from prior drug consumption.
During the judicial investigation, authorities found no indication that Paul intended to take his own life.
He did, however, have a history of narcotics use, and the court ultimately ruled that his death was the result of a drugs overdose.
