British pianist James Rhodes has pleaded with a young woman to reconsider her decision to die by euthanasia today.
The famous musician publicly appealed to Noelia Castillo to reconsider in a message shared on social media just hours before her scheduled death at 6pm.
Rhodes – who has detailed his own history of childhood sexual abuse in his memoir Instrumental – offered to cover all her medical and psychological treatment costs going forward.
‘This has nothing to do with religion or politics,’ he wrote.
‘I wouldn’t dare tell you your decision is wrong. I just want to help you make it from a place of calm, not extreme pain.’
Rhodes added that he believes ‘there is a way through’ and urged her to ‘wait a little longer’ before making an irreversible decision.
Spain is closely watching the case of Noelia, as the 25-year-old is set to undergo euthanasia today, March 26, after receiving legal approval from both the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights.
Noelia, from Barcelona, was left paraplegic after jumping from a fifth-floor window following a brutal rape.
Since then, she has repeatedly described her daily life as ‘horrendous’ and has sought the right to die with dignity.

Despite several legal challenges from her father to halt the process, the courts have ruled that her suffering is genuine and that her decision should be respected.
Her case has reignited debate across Spain over euthanasia, while also prompting public reactions from figures who identify with her experience.
Under current Spanish law, Noelia is expected to receive a combination of three drugs in a procedure lasting around 15 minutes.
She has chosen not to have her parents present at the time of her death, saying she does not want her mother to witness her final moments.
In his full message, shared on Instagram, Rhodes wrote: ‘Since Noelia’s mother read one of the messages I sent her yesterday on television, I thought it appropriate to share it here.
‘Noelia, if by some miracle you are reading this, please get in touch with me (your parents and their lawyer have my information). This has nothing to do with religion or politics, your family, or your finances.
‘I wouldn’t dare tell you that your decision (and it is entirely yours) is wrong. It’s simply about providing you with some tools that might help you make such a permanent and final decision from a place of relative peace rather than extreme physical and emotional pain.
‘We share many similarities, and I, too, have spent a great deal of time researching legal and not-so-legal ways to end my life. That time now seems like a world away.
‘I want to tell you that I will cover all the costs of the best medical and psychological care for as long as you need until you feel capable of making this decision from a somewhat calmer place.
‘I promise you it is possible. And I ask you to be brave one last time and wait a little longer to see for yourself if there is another option.
‘I’m here whenever you need me, my dear. If I didn’t believe 100% that there is a way forward, I wouldn’t be writing this. With love, James.’
