Vox is the only major party that has yet to officially announce its candidate for the upcoming Andalucia elections, although the decision now appears to be a matter of timing rather than uncertainty.
The party has been waiting for regional president Juanma Moreno to formally call the election before holding a meeting of its national executive committee.
However, all indications suggest it will stick with its current parliamentary spokesperson in Andalucia, Manuel Gavira.
Gavira wasted no time reacting to the announcement that voters will head to the polls on May 17. Within minutes, he took to social media to signal that his party is ready for the campaign ahead.
‘Andalucia is not immune to the wave of common sense sweeping across Spain,’ he said.
‘The time for change in my region has finally come – and on May 17 we will prove it. We are ready.’
His message reflects a broader strategy from Vox, which believes shifting political currents to the right seen across Europe, and increasingly within Spain, could translate into gains in the region.
Gavira is positioning the election as a turning point, arguing that the result could bring what he describes as ‘common sense policies’ to Andalucia.
Among the priorities he has highlighted are tackling housing issues, reducing public spending, taking a harder line on immigration and pushing back against climate policies he says harm the agricultural sector.
Despite this clear direction, Vox has yet to formally confirm its candidate, making it the last major party to do so ahead of the election.
With the campaign now effectively underway, that announcement is expected in the coming days.
