Firefighters carried out a dramatic night-time rescue in Alora after a car plunged into the Guadalhorce river following a collision on the A-7077.
The incident happened when two vehicles collided, causing one of them to leave the carriageway and fall into the river below.
Crews from the Coin station of the Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Malaga were quickly mobilised to the scene.
On arrival, officers from the Guardia Civil, assisted by two tow truck operators, had already managed to remove the driver – the sole occupant of the submerged vehicle – from inside the car.
However, the situation remained highly dangerous.
According to firefighters, it was not safe to move the injured man or attempt to carry him up the riverbank due to the terrain and risk of further injury.
Fire crews used an aerial ladder platform and rope system. With a rescue stretcher, they secured the man before carefully lifting him to safety.
Once brought up from the riverbed, he was treated at the scene by paramedics and later transported by emergency medical services.
After completing the rescue, firefighters descended again to inspect and identify the submerged vehicle.
The second vehicle involved in the collision was driven by a woman who appeared to escape without injury. She was the one who alerted the 112 emergency services.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are now expected to be investigated.
