The Provincial Court of Madrid has acquitted a 22-year-old man who was accused by his former partner of sexual assault and domestic abuse.
The ruling, reported by Europa Press, orders his full acquittal of all charges and exempts him from any civil liability, concluding that there was insufficient evidence to support a conviction.
During the trial, a witness testified that tensions between the couple flared after the defendant’s parents won a lottery prize.
According to the testimony, the complainant had expressed an intention to obtain money following the breakdown of the relationship.
The case began in January 2022, when the woman filed a complaint at the Guardia Civil station in Majadahonda, alleging mistreatment and sexual assault during their relationship.
Proceedings were initially opened as preliminary investigations at Investigating Court No. 1 in Majadahonda before the matter proceeded to trial at the Madrid Provincial Court.
During the process, the complainant claimed that between February 2021 and January 2022 she had been subjected to controlling behaviour, physical and psychological abuse, and forced sexual relations without consent.
Among the accusations were claims that the defendant restricted her clothing and social interactions, insulted and humiliated her, and physically assaulted her on multiple occasions.
The defence strategy focused on questioning the consistency of the evidence presented and highlighting discrepancies between the complainant’s statements at different stages of the proceedings.
Lawyers argued that there were no medical reports, injury records or expert findings to substantiate allegations of physical or sexual violence on the dates in question.
They also pointed out the absence of independent witnesses who could corroborate the alleged episodes of habitual abuse.
The defence further maintained that messages and communications submitted to the court reflected a troubled relationship, but did not necessarily amount to criminal conduct.
After reviewing the entirety of the case, the judges concluded that the alleged offences had not been sufficiently proven and ordered the defendant’s acquittal.
The ruling brings to an end a judicial process lasting more than two years, during which the young man faced serious criminal allegations.
