Shocking footage of a horse being dragged towards the sea during severe flooding in southern Spain sparked alarm online.

But while many feared the worst, the ending, against the odds, was a positive one.

The animal was caught up in rising waters after days of heavy rain battered Andalucia, caused by Storm Leonardo.

The horse became trapped in the swollen River Guadiaro and was later seen floating near its mouth, close to Sotogrande, in the province of Cadiz.

Images shared on social media appeared to show the horse being pulled out towards open water, with little chance of survival.

However, emergency teams were able to reach the animal in time.

The horse was rescued alive and is now safe, bringing relief after what looked like a grim situation.
