Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) has activated the second phase of its Christmas operation in Andalucia, which will run until January 1.
During this period, authorities expect 1,922,800 journeys across the region, with the heaviest traffic forecast over the weekend and on public holidays.
Movements will include both short and long-distance trips to second homes, shopping areas, tourist destinations and mountain zones, placing added pressure on key road corridors.
Roads most at risk of congestion
The DGT has identified several routes likely to experience the worst congestion during the operation, including:
- A-92 and A-92M, Andalucia’s main east–west artery, particularly near Granada and Sevilla
- A-4, on approaches to and from Cordoba and Sevilla
- A-7 and AP-7, especially along the Costa del Sol and the eastern coastline
- A-49, the main route linking Sevilla with Huelva and Portugal
- A-44 and A-45, key access roads to Sierra Nevada and eastern inland areas
- A-66, the north–south corridor
- MA-20, around Malaga’s metropolitan area
- AP-4 and N-4, connecting Sevilla and Cadiz
High traffic volumes are also expected on the secondary road network, particularly near tourist resorts and areas with a high concentration of second homes, where congestion and accidents are more common.
Peak travel times to avoid
Drivers are advised to avoid travelling during the busiest periods, which are expected to be:
- Between 6pm and 9pm on December 26 and 28
- Between 10am and 1pm on Saturday December 27
Planning journeys in advance and checking live traffic conditions is strongly recommended.
Increased policing and 24-hour monitoring
The operation includes round-the-clock monitoring by the Guardia Civil’s traffic division, alongside staff at traffic management centres, supported by helicopters, drones and road maintenance teams.
More than 60 specialists based at control centres in Malaga and Sevilla will oversee traffic flow and provide real-time information, with aerial surveillance focused on locations most prone to incidents.
Government delegate in Andalucía Pedro Fernandez has urged motorists to drive responsibly, stressing the importance of avoiding alcohol when driving and staying informed about road and weather conditions before setting off.
