Authorities in Sevilla are looking for the mother of a baby boy found abandoned inside a block of flats this week.
The newborn still had remnants of his umbilical cord, indicating that he was not born in a hospital and was only hours old when he was found.
The information was confirmed on Wednesday by minister Francisco Toscano, following the discovery inside the entrance of the apartment block on Calle Crater at around noon on Monday.
A local resident immediately alerted the police. While waiting for officers to arrive, she went to a nearby pharmacy to buy nappies and milk for the child.
Policia Nacional officers requested an ambulance so the baby could undergo a full medical examination.
Initial assessments found him to be in good health, and he was taken to Sevilla’s Children’s Hospital, where he remains under observation.
Doctors are carrying out further tests to determine whether the newborn was exposed to alcohol or toxic substances, and to rule out neonatal withdrawal syndrome.
The baby’s mother has not yet been identified, police confirmed.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officers working to establish the identity of the parents.
Those responsible could potentially face charges related to child abandonment, depending on the outcome of the inquiry.
Meanwhile, the Andalusian regional government has formally declared the child abandoned and has assumed legal guardianship.
Once he is medically discharged, the baby will be placed with a foster family with the aim of adoption.
Regional authorities said several families have already expressed willingness to take the child into care.
