The Spanish government has confirmed a new nationwide public transport pass that will allow unlimited travel across much of the country’s rail and long-distance bus network.
From January, the pass will be available at a standard price of €60 per month, with a reduced €30 tariff for under-26s.
The measure will run alongside an extension of the current public transport discounts throughout 2026.
What does the pass include?
The new pass will cover:
- Renfe Cercanías (commuter trains)
- Renfe Media Distancia (medium-distance trains)
- State-run long-distance coach services
High-speed AVE trains are not included, nor are metro systems, trams or urban buses, which fall under the responsibility of regional and local authorities.
Who stands to benefit?
The government estimates that around two million people could significantly reduce their monthly transport costs, particularly commuters who regularly combine regional rail and intercity bus services.
The scheme is designed to simplify fares and encourage greater use of public transport, especially for work and study-related travel.
What happens to existing discounts?
Alongside the new nationwide pass, the government has confirmed it will extend the current transport discounts into 2026, although the exact conditions have not yet been finalised.
At present:
- Urban and intercity passes, as well as 10-journey tickets, benefit from a 40% discount
- Media Distancia, Avant trains and state-run buses offer discounts of between 40% and 70% for young people
These reductions will continue in some form, but further details are expected in the coming weeks.
