Tragic: Mustafi was found dead on the floor alongside his family

Tributes have poured in for a promising footballer who was found dead inside his home in Torrox on Tuesday.

Mustafi, 17, died alongside his parents and 19-year-old brother following a suspected carbon monoxide leak.

The Club Deportivo Torrox uploaded a photo of Mustafi to its Instagram page, lamenting his ‘tragic’ death.

The club wrote: ‘We wish we had never had to deliver this heartbreaking news, but Club Deportivo Torrox deeply regrets the passing of our youth player, Mustafi, who left us today along with three other family members (his parents and brother) in a tragic accident.

‘At just 17 years old, Mustafi joined our project this summer and had become a key player as the right-back for the youth team.

‘Today we say goodbye not only to a footballer with a promising future, but also to a wonderful person, beloved by his teammates, coaching staff, and the entire Torrox family.

Tragic: Mustafi was found dead on the floor alongside his family

‘The loss of Mustafi, along with that of his parents and brother, is an immense sorrow and an absence that will forever mark all who knew them.’

The club added: ‘We want to send all our strength and support to his loved ones, friends, and family during this incredibly difficult time. Our deepest condolences to the entire affected family.

‘Rest in peace, Mustafi and family. Always in our thoughts.’

Investigators believe a faulty combustion in a boiler or water heater led to a carbon monoxide leak.

Firefighters were called at around 3.30pm on Tuesday due to a strong smell of gas, and when they entered the home, they found all the family members dead on the floor.

They were a well-loved family in Torrox, say local reports, who had been living in the apartment for three years.

The father moved to Torrox two decades ago and worked in agriculture, while the mother was a translator and Arabic teacher.

Torrox Town Council has declared three days of official mourning, and a minute of silence will be observed at 10am this morning.

The council is already working with the Moroccan embassy on the repatriation of the bodies.
