A 25-year-old woman has been found dead at her home in Malaga province, allegedly killed by her boyfriend.
The suspect, 28, walked into a Guardia Civil station in Martos (Jaen) at around 1pm on Wednesday, telling officers that he ‘did not know’ whether he had killed her, admitting that he had tried to strangle her.
The alleged murder took place at the home the couple shared in the inland Malaga town of Campillos.
After the boyfriend’s admission, officers were immediately sent to the address, where they found the young woman dead with clear signs of strangulation. The suspect was immediately arrested.
The Government Delegation for Gender Violence has confirmed it has joined the investigation.
If officially classified as a ‘gender-based’ killing, it would be the 39th woman killed by domestic violence in Spain so far this year, and the 1,334th since records began in 2003.
Sources state that both individuals had previously been registered in Spain’s domestic violence system, called VioGén – she as a victim and he as an aggressor.
However, said registrations involved former partners, not each other, and their files were inactive.
Sources told local media that there were no recorded incidents of gender violence between them at the time of the killing.
Campillos Town Hall has announced three days of official mourning. In a statement on social media, the council expressed its ‘firmest condemnation and absolute revulsion’ at the killing and called for residents to attend a public gathering this Thursday at 12pm outside the town hall, where a minute’s silence will be held.
‘This is a terrible crime that shakes our community and reminds us once again of the most painful reality of gender violence, a violence that kills, that devastates families, and that fractures coexistence,’ the council said.
