A 39-year-old man has been beaten unconscious in the heart of the Costa del Sol’s gay capital.
The victim claims three young men branded him a ‘fa***t’ as they beat him repeatedly in the La Nogalera area of Torremolinos.
The alleged attack is said to have occurred at around 6am on the morning of Friday, November 7.
The victim reported the incident to the Policia Nacional, who have opened a hate crime investigation.
The force told Malaga Hoy that the injuries sustained by the victim are fortunately ‘minor.’
In a post on X, the mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, offered ‘all my support and that of our city’ to the victim.
She added: ‘No one should feel afraid because of their sexual orientation. I hope that the attackers will be identified and held accountable for this brutal attack. Not one step back.’
Spokesperson for hard-right party Vox in Torremolinos, Francisco Garrido, demanded more security measures.
In a statement, he described the event as ‘deplorable’ and called on the Torremolinos City Council to increase security in La Nogalera after several homophobic attacks have been reported there in recent months.
‘Unfortunately, this is not the only attack that has occurred in La Nogalera. In May, there were two homophobic attacks, and this week we have to regret another one.
‘We cannot allow residents and tourists to be afraid of being attacked in one of the most touristy neighborhoods in our municipality.’
He accused the mayor of ‘already taking too long’ to reinforce security in the area.
He said: ‘La Nogalera is a neighborhood with a lot of nightlife. From Vox, we demand a permanent police presence in the area until dawn.’
