A tram crashed and set on fire in Sevilla on Monday, sparking panic during the morning rush hour.

The Metrocentro tram collided with an overhead line while travelling towards the neighbourhood of Nervion.

The tram derailed and burst into flames near the San Francisco Javier stop, according to the 112 emergency service.

Operators received multiple calls from witnesses at around 8.05am.

The metro line had to be closed while firefighters and police raced to the scene.

Photos shared online show how a pole struck one carriage, leaving it practically destroyed.

Fortunately, the tram was carrying very few passengers and the fire was put out without incident.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
