A transatlantic flight was forced to make an emergency U-turn just moments after departing Barcelona Airport on Saturday, after a violent hailstorm damaged the nose of the aircraft.
The Airbus A330, en route to the US, had barely left the tarmac when it encountered one of several fierce storms that were sweeping across Catalonia.
Air traffic controllers said the crew radioed in shortly after takeoff, reporting a direct hit from hail and requesting an immediate return due to possible damage.

Once on the ground, it became clear just how severe the impact had been, as the nose cone – or radome – was completely crushed.
The radome houses critical weather radar and electronic systems, making it a vital part of the aircraft’s navigation and safety capabilities.
