Friends of an Irish woman who suffered a cardiac arrest in Spain have launched an appeal to get her home.
Joan needs €50,000 to cover the cost of repatriation, as she remains in an induced coma in a Spanish hospital.
Her family said the insurance company is refusing to cover the cost of Joan’s medical flight home.
The appeal reads: ‘While on her first family holiday in over 20 years, a well deserved break she was so excited for, Joan tragically suffered a cardiac arrest. She is now in a hospital in Spain in an induced coma and on a ventilator receiving intensive care.
‘Her condition is critical and showing no signs of improvement. Doctors have advised the only way for Joan to return home to Ireland to continue her medical treatment here is via a medical plane.
‘The cost of this kind of emergency transport is incredibly high and well beyond what the family can afford on their own.
‘In addition to the cost of the medical flight her daughters are facing mounting expenses just to remain by her side in Spain during this nightmare.
‘It is now peak season as people would be well aware and accommodation alone is costing a crazy amount and that is without food, travel to and from the hospital and time away from their own jobs.’
The appeal continued: ‘I am asking for your help to raise €50,000 to cover the urgent cost of the medical plane and to support the family during this incredibly difficult time.
‘Anyone who knows Joan, knows she is such a lovely, funny, selfless woman who would help anyone in need but now it is her time of need and she needs as much help as possible to bring her home.
‘Every donation, no matter how big or small will make a difference. If you are unable to donate please consider sharing our appeal and keeping Joan in your thoughts and prayers.
‘Joan’s travel insurance is refusing to pay for a medical flight home and will only pay a certain percent towards the cost if she can walk onto the plane in the care of a doctor
‘Your support will be very much appreciated to help bring our Joan home.’
