A 70-year-old man has died while swimming at a busy beach on the Costa Blanca.
The victim was pulled from the sea off El Cura beach in Torrevieja at around 1pm on Tuesday, according to the Valencian Community Emergency Coordination Center (CICU).
There were no lifeguards operating as they do not begin working until the high season officially begins this weekend.
The CICU mobilized a SAMU paramedics unit and a Basic Life Support team to the scene.
Other swimmers performed CPR on the man, following instructions from the CICU by phone, until trained medical teams arrived.
Once on scene, paramedics performed advanced CPR and other life support techniques, but there was no response and his death was confirmed on the beach. An autopsy will reveal the cause of the drowning.
The lifeguard service will be in operation in Torrevieja from this coming weekend and until September 15. The service is also deployed during Easter holidays.
On May 31, a 70-year-old man lost his life on Los Naufragos beach, also in Torrevieja.
