EVERYONE knows by now that the recommended intake of fruits and vegetables is five pieces per day.

Contents
  • Seasonal fruits in April
  • Seasonal veg in April

But what isn’t so clear is when your favourite foods are in season.

In 2023, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs launched an ‘Eat in Season’ campaign to help Spaniards enjoy their fruit and veg during the peak of their natural growth cycle.

Eating a fruit or vegetable when it is in season ensures maximum flavour, quality and overall freshness.

Seasonal fruits in April

In April, the citrus fruits in season are oranges and grapefruits. Both are packed with vitamin C and are excellent sources of fibre and antioxidants.

Antioxidants are known to boost the immune system and can protect against certain diseases.

In terms of berries, both raspberries and strawberries are in season in Spain this month. They are also both rich in vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants.

Other fruits in season this month are avocados, kiwis, bananas and lemons.

Seasonal veg in April

When it comes to vegetables, the list of seasonal options is long.

Among them are beetroots and carrots, both known to aid digestion and be packed with vitamins, including A, B, C, K.

The other vegetables in season include spinach, asparagus, lettuce, cucumber, pepper, leek, chard, artichoke, celery, broccoli, courgette, onion, cauliflower and chicory.
